Le Cantou is situated in the hilltop village of Villasavary, in Cathar Country
to the west of Carcassonne, between the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. The
village dates back to 1162, when it was mentioned in historical records as
‘Villari-Severic’ It is within easy reach of the ancient market town of
Limoux.
The nearest town is Castelnaudary, set on the banks on the Canal du Midi and
which is home to the French Foreign Legion. |

Villa Le Cantou is also within easy reach of the Medieval City of
Carcassonne, the traditional market towns of
Revel and Mirepoix and is a short drive from the bustling
city of Toulouse.
The Pyrenees are just over an hour’s drive and are a spectacular setting for a
lazy summer picnic. The nearest Mediterranean beach is under an hour away just
south of Narbonne.
There are plenty of marked country walks in the area. They are well mapped and
indicate the degree of difficulty. Four such walks start from a square in the
centre of Villasavary, as do a number of cycle rides. There are also many Cathar
Castles to visit; the nearest being in the village of
Saissac. It is built on a rocky spur with a vast quadrangular
defensive wall dominated by the remains of a dungeon. |
